Pro Clean was founded in 1974 by Mike Wheatley. He took over what was then Sears Carpet Cleaning. At the time, Pro Clean mainly handled carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning practices. Over time, it became apparent that Pro Clean needed to become more versatile and handle both water and fire damages. Soon, we were completing a fair amount of fire damage restoration and added an air duct cleaning crew. Mike was able to establish Pro Clean as the leader in carpet and upholstery cleaning in Hampton Roads. He quickly became one of the largest non-franchised carpet cleaning companies in the greater Hampton Roads area.
Mike started selling supplies to some of the other companies in the area out of a closet at the Pro Clean offices in 1990. Quickly the “Cleaners Closet” became the areas largest dealer of chemicals and supplies. Mike became very consumed with that business and left Pro Clean in the hands of his manager Billy Shoen.
In 1999, Billy, who had been the manager for Mike for about three years, and his wife Carol were able to purchase the company with the help of Mr. Wheatley. In a very short period of time, Pro Clean changed from a “cleaning” company to a full restoration company who was also able to handle many types of cleaning and construction.
When Billy became owner, he assembled a team of highly trained managers who have now created a successful business that currently employs 33 full-time people and boasts five different divisions: Construction Division, Painting Division, Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, Air Duct Cleaning, and In-Plant Area Rug Cleaning.
